MCC ITS offers Virtual Private Networking (VPN) service to employees who are working offsite. This includes faculty and staff who are telecommuting or traveling for business purposes. This page will demonstrate how to connect to our VPN.

When do I need to use MCC's VPN?

  • When connecting to file shares on MCC's network.
  • When logging into HRMS or CFS.
  • When controlling your office computer from offsite.

When do I NOT need to use MCC's VPN?

  • When checking your MCC or District email.

Connecting to MCC's VPN Service (Windows XP)

Open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer) and type https://mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the address bar. Click Continue to this website if you are presented with a certificate error screen.


After the logon screen loads, type in your MCC username and password and click Login.


After logging in, the MCC VPN main page will load:


From here, you can use the HRMS and CFS links provided for you by clicking on "HR APPS" or "CFS-OWA", respectively, in the "Web Bookmarks" portion of the page:



When using the VPN in this manner, a small toolbar will load in the upper corner of the website you are using:


The first button Image:VPNButton1.jpg allows you to toggle the toolbar from one side of the page to the other, in case it is i the way of something you are trying to use on the page. Pressing the second button Image:VPNButton2.jpg will provide you with a window allowing you to type in a web URL to navigate to. The third button Image:VPNButton3.jpg will take you back to the VPN home page. The last button Image:VPNButton4.jpg will close your VPN session.

You can also type in the web address of other websites within the District that may only be accessible from within the District Network by using the Address bar at the top of the VPN home page.


If you are able to accomplish all that you need to do from this page, simply click Logout when you are done. If you need more fully featured functionality, please continue reading.


If you need functionality such as connecting to file shares or controlling your office computer remotely, you will want to use the "AnyConnect" feature of MCC's VPN. You can begin this process by clicking on the AnyConnect button on the left side of the MCC VPN home page.


The AnyConnect page will load to the right. Click on Start AnyConnect to begin.


If this is the first time you've used AnyConnect, the VPN will automatically load the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client software onto your computer. Your browser may present you with a message at the top of your browser window warning you about installing software from the Internet. Click on this message and choose Install File.


You will be presented with another message asking you to confirm that you want to install the file. Click Install.


The VPN will then begin to install the necessary software automatically:


You will then be presented with a page informing you that the connection was established:


Once this process is complete, you can use your computer as though it was physically attached to MCC's network. You will be able to access file shares via shortcuts on your desktop, or control your office computer via Microsoft's Remote Desktop utility. (Note: You may need to contact Technology Support Services at 461-7217 to make sure your office computer is properly configured for you to control it remotely.)

After AnyConnect has completed loading, you will see a new icon Image:VPNXP12.jpg in your system tray:


Double-clicking on this icon will present you with a screen allowing you to view information about the program and statistics about your connection. You can also disconnect from the VPN by clicking on the Connection tab and then clicking Disconnect.


Should you wish to connect to MCC's VPN again, simply repeat the steps listed above. Alternatively, after the AnyConnect software has loaded on your computer, you can skip the web-based portion of the VPN sign on process. The installation procedure will have placed a shortcut in your Start menu. To access it, simply click on Start, then All Programs (or just Programs if using the Classic Windows theme on Windows XP), then Cisco, then Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, then Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client.


The AnyConnect VPN Client software will load. You will want to make sure it says mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the Connect to: box and Faculty/Staff in the Group: box. To complete the login process, type in your mccusername and password in the appropriate boxes, and then click Connect.


You will know the connection was successful when you see the familiar AnyConnect icon Image:VPNXP12.jpg in the system tray:


You can now access MCC resources as though you were connected to a computer physically attached to our network. If you have problems or questions, please Contact Technology Support Services.



Connecting to MCC's VPN Service (Windows Vista)

The process of connecting to MCC's VPN when using Windows Vista is very similar to that of Windows XP. The process begins with adding https://mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer's security settings.

In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu (Alt+T if your menu bar is hidden) and click on Internet Options.


Once the Internet Options window opens, click on the Security tab at the top of the window, then click on Trusted Sites. Doing so will enable the Sites button. Click on this button.


When the Trusted Sites window opens, type https://mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the Add this website to the zone: box and click the Add button. Once that is done, click Close. Finally, click OK on the Internet Options window.


Once the security settings have been allowed, https://mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the address bar (if you haven't done so already). Click Continue to this website if you are presented with a certificate error screen.


After the logon screen loads, type in your MCC username and password and click Login.

Open a web browser (such as Safari) and type https://mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the address bar. Once the page loads, log in with your MCC Username and Password and click Login.


After logging in, the MCC VPN main page will load:


From here, you can use the HRMS and CFS links provided for you by clicking on "HR APPS" or "OWA", respectively, in the "Web Bookmarks" portion of the page:

The AnyConnect page will load to the right. Click on Start AnyConnect to begin.


If this is the first time you've used AnyConnect, the VPN will automatically start downloading the necessary software to your computer. You may be presented with a series of prompts. These prompts are the result of the VPN using a self-signed security certificate and are not cause for alarm. Click Trust on the first certificate message:


Click Run at the hostname message:


Click Trust at the Cisco Systems Applet message:


Finally, MacOS may ask for your password to download and install the software. This will be the username and password you use to sign on to your laptop, and may not necessarily be the same as your MCC username and password, especially if the laptop you are using belongs to you and not MCC.


Once the software has been installed, you will be presented with the following page telling you that the AnyConnect VPN Client connection has been established. You are now able to use your computer as though you were physically attached to MCC's network.


You will see the AnyConnect icon added to your menu bar:


Clicking on this icon will allow you to perform a number of functions, including viewing the statistics of your connection and disconnecting from the VPN:



The next time you need to use MCC's VPN, you can repeat the steps listed above or you can connect directly through the AnyConnect Client software that was installed on your computer. To do so, open a Finder window and browse to /Applications/Cisco/Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client:


Double-clicking on this icon will present you with the following screen:


Type in mccvpn.mc.maricopa.edu in the Connect to: box and hit enter. Click Accept at the Certificate Verification message:


Enter your MCC Username and Password in the appropriate fields, make sure it says Faculty/Staff in the Group box and click Connect.


The connection will be established. It's complete when you see the AnyConnect icon loaded to your menu bar:
